SVETLANA DVORETSKAIA, FOUNDER AND PRODUCER
“Svetlana Dvoretskaia…is one of the independent impresarios stepping into the void still left by Livent.” -WholeNote Magazine
“We’ve got a new cultural icon in the making, and Canadian audiences are already lining up at the box office” – Lifestyles Magazine

Toronto’s Show One Productions was founded in 2004 by the enigmatic Svetlana Dvoretskaia. Along with thrilling fans with the high calibre of “serious” classical artists , Ms. Dvoretskaia is by no means a snob, and has a sense of humour – she regularly books such acts as the beloved all-men’s dance troupe, Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo and classical music humourists Iguedsman and Joo.
A born communicator, Svetlana currently hosts a Toronto monthly arts and culture program on Russian television, where she chats about the arts scene, including interviews with artists who visit Toronto to perform.
Trained as a classical pianist herself, Svetlana’s extensive exposure to a wide range of artists and musicians at a young age influenced her to become an impresario. She paid her dues upon her arrival in Canada in 1998; arts jobs were hard to come by, so she volunteered at concerts and worked at a clothing store, with long hours and duties that weren’t particulary appealing. Her parents weren’t thrilled she immigrated to Canada for this. Then she did business development for two large human resource companies, but a “normal” job working 9 -5 wasn’t for her, either. Her desire to be a concert producer remained constant, so she organized her first concert in Toronto in 2004. The event, “Vladimir Spivakov and Moscow Virtuosi”, was a huge success, and Show One Productions was born.
Giving back is an important part of Svetlana’s philosophy, and Show One together with the Russian born businesman Alex Shnaider, has donated partial proceeds to Sick Children’s Hospital, Princess Margaret Hospital, and the Children of Chernobyl. Svetlana has also served on the Board of Directors for Toronto Ashkenaz Festival from 2006-2009.
The daughter well-known Russian pianist Anetta Maizel and Dr. Michael Dvoretsky, Svetlana was born and raised in St. Petersburg, Russia. She is a music school graduate and holds a Masters Degree in Business and Theatre Management from the Academy of Culture in St. Petersburg. She resides in Toronto.

Q & A with Svetlana Dvoretskaia:
What motivated you to start your own business?
One day, I just realised this is the only way for me to do what I want to do.
If you weren’t an “impresaria”, what would you do instead?
I would be an “imprasaria”!
What’s the most rewarding thing about Show One Productions?
I take pride that Show One is automatically associated with quality and high profile concerts. I also love working with the Spivakov Foundation, which helps kids get musical instruments and lessons. It’s so pure and honest, and full of love. I really care about this project, as well as supporting talented children here in Canada.
What drives you crazy about your job?
The accounting part. I hate it!!
Who is your mentor?
I am still looking for one. Anybody…???
We only see what’s onstage. What goes on backstage, say, an hour before the show?
I can only compare it to pre-delivery in the natal ward. You’re just about to deliver, and all hell breaks loose: last-minute disasters, preparations, running to box office and back, somebody forgot cufflinks, adrenaline is pumping, and your face is red from all the pressure at the moment….it’s essential to have on good make up during the event to conceal what’s really going on with your face!
What’s your advice to up-and-coming entrepreneurs?
How do you spend your free time?
I have great friends and we spend really good times together. We see movies, go to the theatre, and consume wine and food! I love good wine and good food.
Last great book I read was … Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert.
People would be surprised to know that … I really enjoy boxing classes! One on one. I want to get back to it this year, along with playing the piano again after a twenty-year hiaturs. Time to make music – not just present it!
