“Terem Quartet was one of the first bands to overthrow Soviet folk music by harking back to the ancient Russian traditions in a style that fits in with modern musical tastes.” – The Baltic Times

Peter Gabriel, Led Zeppelin & Prince Charles Are Fans … You will be too!

In 1986, four music students at the prestigious St. Petersburg Conservatory were suffering from an overdose of Tchaikovsky. What did the Doktor prescribe? A drop of pop, a spoon of folk, an ounce of gypsy, and a dash of classical seemed just the cure. Armed with their instruments and a zany sense of humour, the four musicians drank the concoction and formed the Terem Quartet. Twenty years later, Terem Quartet has become a Russian phenomenon; as much a symbol of St. Petersburg as the Hermitage.
Now, Toronto audiences will have the opportunity to become fans of Terem Quartet  as they perform a special, one night only concert at the Jane Mallett Theatre on Friday, November 2, 2007.
Comprised of Alexey Barshchev, Mikhail Dziudze, Andrey Konstantinov, and Andrey Smirnov, Terem Quartet  has revolutionized the way music is played on folk instruments. Each musician is simultaneously a composer, arranger and improviser on their respective instruments: the domras (lutes), an accordion, and one unbelievably huge bass balalaika!

In 1991, Terem Quartet was invited to appear at WOMAD and immediately embraced by Peter Gabriel who signed the group to his label, Real World Records, producing two cds, Terem and Classical. After the success of this first album, Terem Quartet had no shortage of invitations to play beyond Russian borders. They performed at the Olympic Games in Barcelona in 1992, at the anniversary of German reunification in 1992, before world leaders at the 2006 G8 Summit, and at St. James’s Palace upon the invitation of Prince Charles. Prior to coming to Toronto, Terem Quartet will perform at New York’s famous 92nd Street Y on October 28th, and next year, they look forward to a major concert with the Berlin Philharmonic.

Terem Quartet’s technical virtuosity and wildly contemporary attitude to gypsy and folk melodies, pop tunes, and their classical music heritage have gained them fans along the likes of Led Zeppelin, Nigel Kennedy and Bobby mcferrin … now it’s Toronto’s chance to discover this world music sensation!
