Dani Girl is a new musical that received its world premiere in Barrie, Ontario last year as part of Talk Is Free Theatre’s 2010/2011 season. It is the first musical by the hottest young duo on the American musical theatre scene, Michael Kooman (music) and Christopher Dimond (books and lyrics). In 2010 they were the recipients of the prestigious Jonathan Larson Award and were recently Fellows at the O’Neil Music Theater Conference, as well as finalists for the 2009 Fred Ebb Award. Dani Girl was selected to be part of the prestigious National Alliance for the Musical Theatre’s 2011 Festival of New Musicals in New York. Every year, the two festival presents eight new works to industry professionals. Past participants include The Drowsy Chaperone, Thoroughly Modern Millie and Songs For A New World.
Also returning is Jonathan Logan as Dani’s friend Marty. Jonathan is also one of Toronto’s newest and most promising talents. He has previously worked with TIFT on One Step Forward, Dear World and The Producers. Some of his other notable credits include Peter Pan (Neptune Theatre), You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown, Snoopy (Glasgow Square) and Les Miserable (Festival Antigonish).
Joining the original cast members is Amanda LeBlanc, aside from numerous appearances in various television shows for CTV, CBC and the Discovery Channel, Amanda is making a name for herself through her work with some of Canada’s best theatre companies. Favourite credits include Kiss of the Spider Woman, TIFT; Pride and Prejudice, Citadel Theatre; Paper Bag Princess, The Grand Theatre; Scatch, Canadian Stage Company. Amanda is a graduate of the prestigious National Theatre School.
Director Richard Ouzounian leads this stellar cast. For TIFT he has previously directed Emily, Anyone Can Whistle, Variations on a Nervous Breakdown, Napoleon, Red Fightin’ Blue and Dear World. He is well known in the Toronto Theatre scene as The Star’s Theatre critic and he is also a director, writer, actor and lyricist for over 250 professional shows across North America. Joining Richard, is Musical Director Wayne Gwillim, who was the Assistant Conductor/Keyboardist for Shaw’s One Touch Venus, the Assistant Conductor of The Sound of Music and the alternate keyboardist/vocalist for Jersey Boys
